Keith does Michelangelo – 1984

Keith Haring - Marriage of Heaven and Hell 1984 in Paris- photo Benjamin Bergery-Marriage of Heaven and Hell, 1984, acrylic on canvas

Haring’s work is full of the simplicity of good and evil: forever battling and intermingled, but always clearly delimited.
As clear as an X across your face.

The only ambiguous character here is the figure riding the horizontal cross, neither angel nor demon, half-way between heaven and hell.

Although labeled as an illustration of William Blake, this giant canvas also evokes Michelangelo’s giant frescoes of the Creation of Adam and the Day of Judgement.
